Web popularity 'resulting in high data growth'
Date: Thursday 30th April 2009

The internet is one of the main reasons why the amount of data in existence is rapidly growing, it has been suggested.
Speaking to Computer Technology Review, Deepak Mohan of Symantec said that the fact new global economies are storing data online and the trend of small businesses needing to communicate with larger firms through email and other online tools have helped to expand the amount of data currently available.
He predicted that companies will eventually make a complete move to disk-based data backup due to their recovery time objectives, while there is likely to be more applications, platforms,
virtual private servers and databases spread out around the world.
"At the same time, we will begin to see another shift with data protection as more users adopt software-as-a-service and 'backup in to the cloud' technologies," Mr Mohan remarked.
Large-scale virtual server implementations will increase significantly by 2013, helping to push up revenues from virtual server management software as a result, according to a recent IDC report.
