Virtual servers 'not impacting on hardware sales'

Date: Thursday 16th July 2009

Sales of computer hardware have not been affected by the decision of many firms to switch to virtual private server solutions, according to an expert.

Charles Ferland, vice-president of Blade Network Technologies, has claimed in an interview that while server transactions may have dropped, sales in other areas are making up for any decrease.

Talking to IT Pro, he added that virtualisation still leads firms to need other types of computing technology.

"Datacentre customers are purchasing more powerful processors with large memory configurations, in order to handle the large number of virtual machines on each physical server," he explained.

"Despite less hardware requirements, for customers using virtualised environments, it is necessary to buy bigger, better and more powerful processing technology."

A recent report published by Business Insights found server virtualisation can boost efficiency.
