University adopts server virtualisation
Date: Thursday 29th October 2009

Server virtualisation technology is to be introduced at Middlesex University in a bid to improve the institution's IT operations.
In news of interest to
virtual private server users, the university has gained access to a new hosted, virtualised server and storage environment.
IT chiefs hope the deployment will allow it to reduce the number of servers from 250 to just 25, cutting energy usage by almost half in the process.
Paula Vickers, pro vice-chancellor and director of the computing and communication systems service at Middlesex University, said: "We needed to upgrade our existing hardware and were looking for a solution that offered reliable, modern, scalable infrastructure to underpin [our] business systems and activities."
She said a key requirement was a solution that also helped reduce the university's carbon footprint through the deployment of modern, energy-saving hardware.
ITvoir Network's Pooja Vij recently claimed that hosted technology such as
virtual private servers can reduce costs for end users.
