Microsoft SaaS 'a viable option to on-premise software'

Date: Tuesday 16th June 2009

Software as a service (SaaS) provides a number of benefits for organisations, a leader of Microsoft has announced.

According to BNET Technology, Bob Muglia, president of Microsoft's key server and tools division, told a technology conference that running Microsoft Exchange email servers is a cost-effective option for businesses.

SaaS is suitable for individuals and firms which want to provide a high-level service but do not want to build the software themselves.

"Customers can get an incredibly good experience at a cost lower than they could by running [the software] themselves," the publication noted Mr Muglia as saying.

BNET Technology questioned when all of Microsoft's applications will be offered as a service, especially now the firm recognises that SaaS is a "viable alternative for both customers and vendors to on-premise software".

Writing for IT Web, Roger Strain, managing director of business solutions firm Liquid Thought, noted that Microsoft's move to offer Sharepoint, CRM and Office SaaS reflects how it is becoming an increasingly popular choice for enterprises.

SaaS offers automatic upgrades without extra cost and inconvenience, he added.
