Too many cloud computing standards 'could be a bad thing'

Date: Tuesday 1st September 2009

Modern managed hosting services such as cloud computing could be damaged by the implementation of too many industry standards, it has been claimed.

According to Internet Evolution's Tom Nolle, "too many standards are worse than no standards at all".

He claimed that being too prescriptive can hinder the development of fledgling industries as it can stifle innovation and implementation.

Mr Nolle said: "In the case of cloud computing, there's also the big question of whether standards being pushed for private clouds will end up contaminating the successful internet model of cloud computing."

"I count a total of seven bodies with some interest in this space, and no implementation to show for it," he added.

He concluded that the world needs a body whose sole task is to unify and harmonise cloud computing standards within a single model.

Recent research by IDC has shown that cloud computing is becoming more accepted in the business community.

The company claimed that the hosting solution is no longer a niche service aimed at companies at the cutting edge of IT.
