Data security 'crucial for all businesses'
Date: Friday 29th January 2010
Businesses must make the protection of customer data their absolute priority, it has been claimed.
Robert Keitch, chief of membership and brand for the Direct Marketing Association, said that a number of high-profile instances of data theft, loss and misuse have highlighted the need for enhanced security.
Speaking of the dangers faced by
email marketing providers and other firms, he said that companies have received "rough justice at the hands of the media".
They have also lost customers, damaged their brand and incurred significant punitive fines imposed by regulators, Mr Keitch added.
He stated: "Implementing robust consumer information security measures must therefore be a top priority for any company that holds customer data - not doing so could strike a serious blow to their bottom line."
Earlier this week, Patricio Robles told Econsultancy that all firms should be looking to improve their website security in order to protect their brand.
