Cloud computing needs to address security issues

Date: Wednesday 23rd September 2009

Cloud computing service providers need to do more to address security concerns surrounding the relatively new technology, it has been claimed.

According to CA and Symantec, two internet security giants, businesses offering cloud computing need to create service level agreements with guarantees surrounding data handling and accessibility.

Bill Mann, senior vice president of strategy in CA's security management business unit, said that few firms operating in the sector can make those guarantees, reports Computer Weekly.

Meanwhile, John Turner, vice-president of technical sales at Symantec's EMEA operation, said that businesses should be aware that cloud computing service providers do not always have the same level of security that companies use in-house, the website states.

However, according to InfoStor, while traditional storage technologies excel in some areas in-house storage is not necessarily the best solution for many firms.

The website claimed that cloud computing is starting to mature and can offer firms economies of scale and therefore cheaper managed hosting.
