Generic domain names 'can improve organic search rankings'
Date: Wednesday 20th May 2009

The domain auction marketplace Sedo has announced it will hold a week-long auction of premium career-related domain names such as Resumes.com.
Finance and careers have been brought to the forefront of the public consciousness and job-related searches have increased in popularity during the recession, Sedo reported.
Organisations can "significantly" improve organic search ranking for their websites and reduce pay-per-click advertising costs by owning a generic domain which contains popular related search terms and describes a company's service or product.
Sedo commented on the examples of the Bank of America, which uses Loans.com, and CNN.com, which owns Money.com, as ways in which companies have successfully deployed and implemented a premium generic domain strategy.
In a separate one-day auction on June 25th, the domain auction website will attempt to sell Wealth.com.
Jeremiah Johnston, general counsel and chief operating officer at Sedo.com, said: "These [generic] domains have the power to dramatically improve company web traffic and search results, while creating instant brand credibility that will last well beyond the economic downturn."
Sedo previously reported that in the first quarter of 2009 it experienced a 6.5 per cent increase in domain name sales registered.
