Domain names 'do not need keywords for SEO success'

Wednesday 25th March 2009

Domain names containing top keywords are not necessarily the key to search engine optimisation (SEO) success, according to one expert.

Andy Hodges of NewsOxy.com explained that it is sufficient for websites to register domain names pertaining to the name of the business, for example, and develop content that is optimised for the keywords they want to rank highly for.

He went on to note that those wishing to improve SEO through their URLs would do well to include keywords in sub-domains or folders where they are relevant to the content in question.

"For example, you could have a website like 'MyPopularWebsite.com/pizza-restaurant' and it will do just as well as a 'pizzarestaurant.com' as long as you use the proper HTML tags," Mr Hodges stated.

According to Peter Da Vanzo of the SEOBook blog, using domain names that contain too many generic terms could potentially hamper a site's credibility in the eyes of web users.
