Domain name security software in development

Date: Thursday 30th July 2009

Web experts are creating new open source software to manage the security of domain names on the internet.

Researchers from global bodies including NLNetLabs and .SE have joined forced to create the platform, which it is hoped will make it easier for firms to deploy domain name system security extensions (DNSSEC).

The so-called OpenDNSSEC software is set to work with all versions of the Unix operating system and no manual management will be needed for the use of cryptographic keys or zone signing.

Patrik Wallstrom, responsible for DNSSEC at .SE, said management around domains "must be simplified".

"Leveraging our deployment experience, we will produce a well-packaged, easy-to-use and flexible DNSSEC tool that eliminates all manual procedures," he added.

The Internet Society recently met at an event in Stockholm to discuss the implementation of DNSSEC, as the technology is expected to make domains tamperproof and in turn prevent fraudulent activity across the web.
