Domain growth slows
Date: Monday 24th November 2008
Growth in the domain name sector fell during the last year, according to the latest research figures.
Statistics released in the Domain Name Industry 2008 Report showed a drop in registration increases when compared to previous levels.
The study commented increases in uptake had been 30 per cent for the last five years, but this has dropped to 15 per cent for the last 12 months.
It is stated in the research generic top-level domains such as .com and .net have been the hardest hit in the new figures, with growth stalling at less than 10 per cent.
Phil Kingsland, director of marketing for Nominet, told vnunet.com the previous high levels of uptake rises could "not go on forever".
He added: "Domain names have been around for a while and you would expect a levelling off."
Recently, Denic added a password security system, which will be available next month, for use with individual domains.
