Charity domain name in pipeline
Date: Friday 24th July 2009
Third sector organisations should have their own .ngo domain name, according to a charity.
Article 25 has called for a group of charities to join forces and bid for the name, in the aftermath of the regularly body ICANN's announcement that from next year firms will be able to bid for new domains.
Talking to Third Sector Online, Article 25 chief executive Victoria Harris said the move would cut the number of bodies fraudulently using .org.
She added: "In order to have a web address ending in .ngo, a group would have to prove to the consortium that it was a genuine charity."
Last week, a woman in Manchester raised eyebrows when she become the first person to change her birth name to a web domain.
According to the Independent, Claire Forshaw is now legally known as Princess-Rainbow.com.
