Monday 6th April 2009
New statistics have revealed that there are now more than three million registered .eu domain names in Europe.
According to the European commission, the number of registered .eu domains rose by two per cent in the first three months of 2009, with the domain being the fifth most popular country code top-level domain globally.
Registrations involving the .eu domain name have risen every year since it was first launched in 2006.
The countries with the highest numbers of registrations include Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, France and Poland. Sweden recently registered a .eu domain name for its forthcoming European Union (EU) presidency website.
Viviane Reding, EU commissioner for information society and media, said that the gesture "shows that .eu ... is becoming the natural choice for anyone seeking a European online identity".
About 24 million new domain name registrations were made globally in 2008, according to recent figures from VeriSign.
