25th birthday celebrations for .uk domain names

Monday 26th July 2010

The .uk domain name, used by business websites across Britain, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Nominet reports that over 8.5 million web addresses have been registered with domain name consultancies using the extension since it was created in 1985.

The firm found that 77 per cent of consumers prefer to use a .uk domain than the .com alterative.

It was first used some six years before the world's first website was created by CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research – in 1991.

Earlier this year, .com also celebrated its quarter anniversary, having been created in March 1985, some four months before the UK country code.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is currently in the process of allowing companies to register their own generic top-level domains.
