25 registrants for new domain names ? ICANN
Wednesday 25th January 2012
There have been 25 registrants for new generic top level domain names, the body administrating the overhaul has said.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said the new application system for domain names had gone "without a hitch".
At midnight on Thursday January 12th, ICANN began accepting applications for new generic top level domain names, beginning what is thought to be one of the biggest changes in the evolution of the internet.
The new program expands the current 22 top level domain names – like .com and – to include almost any word or name.
It means UK companies can now create bespoke domain names with their own customised suffix, subject to a $185,000 (£118,000) fee.
"One week into the process, the application system for the new domain names is functioning just as it should," said Rod Beckstrom, ICANN's president.
"This is a reflection of the careful planning, hard work and long hours our staff spent preparing for last week's launch.
The 90-day window for top level domain names runs until April 12th 2012.
