Almost two-thirds of airline sites 'are unreliable'
Date: Tuesday 28th April 2009

About 62 per cent of airline sites do not have an acceptable level of uptime, according to a new study by Pingdom.
The company said in its latest report that 26 of the 42 sites it detected had uptime of less than 99.8 per cent, which is what the firm deems to be the minimum acceptable limit for this category of website.
Websites with 99.9 per cent or higher uptime included KLM, United Airlines, Japan Airlines, Frontier, Virgin Blue, Open Skies, Skynet Asia and British Airways.
The research also found that five of the sites surveyed had uptime of less than 99 per cent, equivalent to over three days and 15 hours of downtime over the course of a year.
Highlighting the importance of
reliable web hosting, Pingdom said in a blog post: "Ideally, the aim for websites this important should be to consistently stay above a 99.9 per cent uptime.
"Organisations with good resources should be able to manage this."
Pingdom recently made available for download a free information sheet converting uptime percentages into the actual amount of downtime that can be expected per month and per year.
