Internet Explorer 8 'the most popular web browser'

Wednesday 3rd February 2010

Internet Explorer 8 has become the world's most widely used web browser, a new study has indicated.

Despite the French and German governments both recently warning over its security, the browser has quickly surpassed Internet Explorers 6 and 7 in terms of consumer popularity.

Research conducted by NetMarketShare indicated that 22.31 per cent of users have now adopted the latest version, compared to the 20.07 per who rely on Internet Explorer 6 and the 17.1 per cent who prefer Mozilla Firefox.

Cliff Saran, managing editor of Computer Weekly magazine, said he was "not surprised" by the findings.

He suggested that the latest version of Internet Explorer had received a competitive advantage by being shipped with Windows 7.

The fact that it is available as a free update to Microsoft users may also have encouraged adoption, he noted.

However, Mr Saran described the likes of Google Chrome and Firefox as being "good alternatives", comments which may interest web hosting users.
