Fixed broadband coverage 'continuing to increase'

Tuesday 2nd February 2010

Web hosting services may prove to be increasingly important for businesses as more consumers embrace the online environment.

A new study conducted by Informa Telecoms & Media has indicated there will be more than 500 million broadband subscriptions around the world by the end of 2010.

The study also highlighted the increasingly global nature of the internet – identifying China, Russia and Mexico as key growth areas.

Commenting on the study, eDigitalResearch's IT director Shane Wright noted that having a fast connection is important for all web users.

And with more consumers now using fixed broadband, there are greater opportunities for business users in terms of website design, he stated.

Mr Wright claimed designers can confidently serve richer content, doing so "more dynamically and without the prohibitive latencies experienced with non-broadband connections".

The world's fastest broadband connections are currently found in South Korea, where downloads of 100Mbps are not uncommon, according to web traffic management firm Akamai.
